Share Your Observations - Predator Free Whangārei

Do you live in Whangārei Heads and noticed a positive change in the environment around you? We would love to hear from you!

The Possum Free Whangārei Heads team is building on and working alongside many existing community pest control efforts to eliminate introduced predators from your community. We know locals are already noticing native wildlife flourishing as a result in some areas.

Fill in the form below to let us know about any positive environmental changes you’ve noticed in your backyard or within your neighbourhood. This could include:

  • an increase in bird sightings or birdsong,
  • more and/or varied native species,
  • no more rat droppings,
  • or just more fruit on your trees – we want to hear it all!

Your observations will help us to understand the effects the predator-free mahi is having on you and could help future projects, too.

Please note: There are many conservation community groups and individuals in this area so any observations could be a combined effort between the Possum Free project (which also can target rats and stoats with certain tools) and other pest controllers in your area. Sharing as much information as you can from your observation will help us more with the anecdotal data.

Thank you for sharing your observations with us!

    Possum-Free Whangārei Heads

Thanks to decades of dedicated mahi from local conservation groups and numerous volunteers, the predator population has been suppressed and kiwi numbers have increased in Whangārei Heads.

By 2025, we aim to eradicate possums from the entire Whangārei Heads peninsula – an area covering over 9,000ha, which will be one of the first possum-free zones on mainland New Zealand.
